Tramadol side effects. What every patient should know.

Side effects can occur while undergoing a treatment to cure or improve a disease. The formal definition for this noun phrase is: “any problem that may appear when a treatment affects healthy tissues or organs”. They can be frequent or common, infrequent or rare. Their condition will depend on the drug and the medical background of patients. Why do they occur? They can result from many different causes and the management of unpleasant reactions can lead to a break of the treatment and the use of an alternative therapy. Side effects term may also include some facts that may be considered medical malpractice.

Side effects have two primary elements: process (how occurs) and result (consequence). To reach a safe clinical practice is necessary to fulfill two objectives: to identify the best clinical procedures for each patient, to ensure that these procedures will be used in the right patient. Therefore, the patient safety is possible through the elimination of risks that are previously known and the prevention of the ones that sometimes is necessary to assume because safety does not mean “absence of risk”. Most of common side effects occur before hospitalization. On the contrary, when they occur during hospitalization period, these may be related to hospital system and strategies used to support patients in such cases.

After performing clinical studies using the target drug, scientists have classified them into different groups. Not only are they named according to their severity but also they are recorded according to their incidence. Medical science has reached lately a high level of complexity and sophistication in diagnosis methods and treatments.

What may happen during a treatment with analgesics, for example with Tramadol? It may happen the same, adverse reactions can appear but it does not mean that patients should not use a drug therapy to deal with their suffering. Despite that, they are a reason to take into account when starting a treatment for acute or chronic pain.

Tramadol side effects have been observed and evaluated by performing many clinical trials on thousands of patients around the world. For example, during some double-blind or open-label extension studies of nonmalignant pain, the most reported events were in the CNS and in the gastrointestinal system. It is important to say that in these studies the rate of Tramadol side effects was similar for Tramadol and the other drugs assessed.

Some of the most frequent Tramadol adverse reactions are: dizziness, vertigo, nausea, constipation, headache, somnolence, vomiting, pruritus, CNS stimulation, asthenia, dyspepsia, dry mouth and diarrhea.

It is also necessary to mention some less frequent or more severe Tramadol side effects: accidental injury, allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, suicidal tendency, weight loss, orthostatic hypotension, syncope, tachycardia, abnormal gait, amnesia, dyspnea, cognitive dysfunction, depression, difficulty in concentration, hallucinations, paresthesia, and seizure, among others.

Can dependence or abuse be considered side effects? They are different things. Tramadol is considered to have a possible potential to cause dependence. On the other hand, abuse can lead to severe Tramadol side effects.

Some adverse events, especially nausea, are dose-dependent, so they are more likely to occur if the loading dose is high. The diminution of this dosage during the first days of therapy with Tramadol is an important issue in improving tolerability

If patients experience Tramadol side effects, they should talk to their healthcare professionals immediately. They should be also careful about discontinuing Tramadol abruptly because this action may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Side effects management: side effects do not occur in everybody. Some people may experience them, others may not. Each side effect can be treated in order to go on with Tramadol therapy. If side effects do not disappear, doctors will know the best options for their patients. Other products may be also use to alleviate side effect signs and causes.

If you have been prescribed Tramadol, you can ask your physician some of the following questions to feel more secure before starting the treatment: What side effects may occur? How likely am I to experience them? What can I do to relieve them? How can I know the right moment to call my doctor or pharmacist?

Doctors and patients are able to plan the best strategy before starting a drug therapy with Tramadol, and so they will avoid the probability of side effects. Good diagnosis, clinical tests, professional knowledge and confidence are the key for better treatment results.
